Volkswagen Honors U.S. Steel as Top Global Supplier

United States Steel Corp. was the only steel company among 18 global suppliers to receive an award from Volkswagen under its "Group Award 2009".

Volkswagen’s main criteria for selection of the award recipients included reliability, good partnership in challenging and hard times, global partnership, and excellent customer and technical service.

Volkswagen celebrated with the winning suppliers at a ceremony last week at the Phaeno Science Center in Wolfsburg, Germany. U.S. Steel was represented by John P. Surma, Chairman and CEO, and George F. Babcoke, Senior Vice President European Operations and President of U. S. Steel Kosice. Surma accepted U.S. Steel’s award from Volkswagen board member Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz.

"This recognition from a quality-driven, growth-oriented company like the Volkswagen Group is made possible by the hard work and dedication of our employees,” said Babcoke. “It is our commitment to continue to build on our strategic alignment as a global, leading supplier to the automotive industry in cooperation with our strategic partners like Volkswagen and realize the mutual benefits of the relationship,” he concluded

U. S. Steel has supplied product to Volkswagen plants in Germany and Bratislava since staring up its Kosice Automotive Hot Dip Galvanizing Line in 2007. The company’s steel can be found on the VW Touareg, VW Golf, VW Passat, VW Caddy and most other models manufactured under the Skoda brand of vehicles.

U. S. Steel is expanding, building on its cooperation with the VW Group. Expansions include future business with AUDI in Germany and the VW plants in Mexico and the USA.
