voestalpine Unveils CO2-Reduced Steel
12/09/2021 - The company announced this week it is now offering a CO2-reduced version of the flat steel products produced at its steelmaking facility in Linz, Austria.
According to voestalpine, direct emissions generated during the production of its new greentec steel Edition products have been reduced by around 10%.
“We are already working at full speed at our sites in Linz and Donawitz to develop technical scenarios which will drive forward the decarbonization of steel production,” said Herbert Eibensteiner, chief executive of voestalpine AG. “By manufacturing and supplying CO2-reduced steel, we have achieved an important first milestone on the path to green steel production by 2050.”
The reduction in emissions is achieved by a combination of utilizing green energy, increasing scrap share and modifying the reducing agent and the charge, the company said in a statement.
The company said the next step in its phased plan is to partially replace the existing blast furnace route with a hybrid-electric steel path that could reduce carbon emissions by around one-third by 2030. The company is targeting carbon-neutral steel production by 2050.
