voestalpine to Supply Heavy Plate for Second South Stream Pipeline

Following the first, now completed, contract for the Russian-European pipeline project South Stream, and for Rota 3, a pipeline project in Brazil, voestalpine will deliver 120,000 tons of sour-gas-resistant, high-strength linepipe plates for the second South Stream pipeline by spring 2015. The South Stream contract is not affected by sanctions. Further negotiations are also currently underway concerning extremely challenging pipeline projects.

As with the first South Stream pipeline, 35% of the project volume goes to voestalpine’s long-term Russian partner OMK, which will source around half of its requirements for highest quality heavy plate from Linz. The contract again highlights the professional nature of the partnership between voestalpine Grobblech and Russian tube manufacturer OMK which stretches back over many years. The material being supplied includes highest quality sour-gas-resistant, high-strength linepipe plates. Delivery is scheduled to take place from December 2014 through to spring 2015.

South Stream is a pipeline of around 2,300 km in length, 931 km of which is offshore at depths of up to 2,200 meters. The pipeline will connect Europe with the world’s largest gas reserves in Russia. South Stream is a joint venture between European companies from Italy, Germany, France, and Austria, together with Russia’s Gazprom. South Stream is designed to secure gas supplies for Europe over the long term. The offshore section of the second pipeline is constructed from 75,000 tubes, each 12 meters in length and with a wall thickness of 39 millimeters.
