voestalpine to Expand North American Auto Parts Manufacturing Capacity
08/18/2016 - Austrian steelmaker voestalpine said it will expand its U.S. auto body parts plant and build another after landing an EUR$500 million order for automotive components, the company announced on Wednesday.
voestalpine said that to meet the order, which is from an unnamed German automaker, it will invest about US$50 million in its Cartersville, Ga., facility and spend around $11 million to establish a new facility in Birmingham, Ala.
The Cartersville plant, which makes lightweight, high-strength body parts for North American automakers, already is being expanded. But through the new investment, voestalpine said it will install additional presses and assembly lines. It will be the facility’s third expansion since its opening in 2014, voestalpine said.
In Birmingham, voestalpine has leased a building which will house automated assembly lines for automotive parts. Construction is to begin in the first quarter of 2017, and parts are to begin rolling off the lines later that year.
“The site will ensure the best possible supply of the nearby automotive customers with time-critical and logistically challenging parts. In the future, it will serve as an additional production hub for Cartersville,” the company said in a statement.
