voestalpine Idles Blast Furnace; Closes Global Sites
03/25/2020 - voestalpine has closed facilities in Europe, South America and the U.S. and will temporarily reduce hours at other European sites as global economy slows.
“The coronavirus pandemic and its consequences are facing voestalpine with major economic challenges. As a result of massive reductions in capacity and current production shutdowns in the automotive, aerospace, mechanical engineering, and oil and natural gas industries, demand in the key voestalpine customer segments has collapsed in just a few days,” the company said in a statement.
At its site in Linz, Austria, the company is temporarily shutting down a small blast furnace, curtailing pig iron production by 20%. It also has shut sites in Peru, France, Italy, Brazil and the U.S., it said.
