voestalpine Deepens Investment in Powdered Metals, Additive Manufacturing
08/04/2017 - Austria’s voestalpine said it is investing EUR50 million to expand metal powder production for additive manufacturing and to open two 3D printing research and production facilities in Taiwan and Canada.
In a statement, the company said it is allocating EUR20 million for additional equipment to make high-quality stainless, tool steel, nickel alloy and titanium powders at Austrian subsidiary Böhler Edelstahl GmbH & Co. KG and Swedish subsidiary Uddeholms AB.
“Working in close cooperation with the new research centers, innovative powder types that are even more corrosion-resistant and stronger will be developed for increasingly sophisticated applications,” the company said.
Elsewhere, voestalpine is preparing to open a new research center, voestalpine Technology Institute Asia, this month in Taiwan, giving the company its third research center for metal additive manufacturing. And in Canada, voestalpine said it is building a 3D printing research and production site in Toronto, Ontario.
“voestalpine, with its comprehensive knowledge in manufacturing metal powder and in the design, development, and production of ready-to-install components, is a global pioneer in 3D printing. We want to consistently push ahead with our activities in this area by setting up new research and development centers in non-European growth markets,” said voestalpine chief executive Wolfgang Eder.
