voestalpine Begins €1 Billion Green Transformation at Linz and Donawitz
03/23/2022 - This summer voestalpine will kick off a massive, multi-year project to convert its integrated operations in Linz and Donawitz, Austria, to electric arc furnace technology, according to an official press release.
voestalpine said the first phase of the project will prepare the construction sites and convert necessary infrastructure. Beginning in 2024, Linz and Donawitz will each install an electric arc furnace that will be powered by renewable electricity. The furnaces are expected to come on-line by early 2027.
voestalpine estimated the total cost of the transformation at approximately €1 billion. The switch to electric steelmaking will also lower the company’s CO2 emissions by 3 to 4 million tons per year, voestalpine said.
