Vallourec Provides Tubes for Spire of One World Trade Center in New York
05/08/2013 - Vallourec, a world leader in premium tubular solutions, announced that it has provided the tubes for the newly-installed spire on the top of One World Trade Center in New York.
Vallourec, a world leader in premium tubular solutions, announced that it has provided the tubes for the newly-installed spire on the top of One World Trade Center in New York. The 124-meter high spire was built with 500 tons of specifically designed seamless steel tubes manufactured in Vallourec's French and German mills, and constitutes the finishing touch to the highest building in the U.S. The building's overall height of 1776 feet was chosen in reference to the date of the signature of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.
With the robust and durable structural steel hollow sections produced by Vallourec, which give the structure the necessary stability, the peak of the skyscraper will hold its own against the elements. Because the spire also acts as an antenna, the tubes also guarantee flawless radio coverage for the megacity's media services.
Philippe Crouzet, chairman of Vallourec's management board, declared: "It's an honor to make a contribution to New York's new landmark. It is also a mark of confidence in the quality of our products. We are proud that the tubes provided by Vallourec help One World Trade Center achieve its symbolic height of 1,776 feet."
Vallourec's hot rolled structural steel hollow sections, sold under the MSH registered trademark, were manufactured at the Aulnoye site in France and in the German plants of Mulheim and Dusseldorf. The company then delivered the products to the antenna manufacturer in Canada. The first nine of 18 segments of the spire were installed in December 2012, and the following nine on 2 May 2013.
One World Trade Center is due to open to visitors at the end of 2015. A viewing platform spanning the 100th floor will offer a breathtaking view of New York and the Hudson River.
