Vale Commences Work on Green Pig Iron Plant in Brazil
04/06/2022 - In a ceremony yesterday, Vale marked the start of construction of Tecnored's first commercial green pig iron plant in Marabá, Pará, Brazil.
Tecnored's technology enables the production of the green pig iron through the substitution of metallurgical coal by biomass, thus reducing carbon emissions by up to 100%.
According to Vale, the R$1.6 billion plant will have a production capacity of 250,000 tons per year of green pig iron initially, and may reach 500,000 tons per year in the future.
"The implementation of Tecnored represents an important step in the transformation of mining, contributing toward an increasingly sustainable process chain. The Tecnored project is of great importance for Vale and the region and will provide competitiveness, environmental sustainability, and development to the region," said Eduardo Bartolomeo, Vale’s chief executive officer.
Start-up is expected in 2025.
