UVK to Expand Dofasco Acid Regeneration Capacity
May 25, 2004 — UVK Corp. recently received a contract from Dofasco Inc. to extend the capacity of its acid regeneration plant facility at its Hamilton, Ont., facility.
Dofasco contracted UVK to design and manage a Fluidized Bed technology upgrade to its hydrochloric acid regeneration plant facilities. The goal of the upgrade is to balance capacity requirements of an environmental plant with the production requirements of the steel pickling lines, the origination of the effluent stream. The acid regeneration plants operate with virtually no effluent and produce two useable byproducts; hydrochloric acid, which is regenerated and returned to the pickling process, and iron oxide in the form of dust-free grains/pellets.
UVK’s scope of supply includes twin fluidized bed reactors with associated reactors, cyclones, venturi cooling sections, and separator and absorber columns. The two 8,830 liter per hour plants, which will be the largest and most modern fluidized bed reactors used for steel pickling acid regeneration in North America, will be housed in a common building area with a relatively small footprint. Minor modifications to the existing tank farm and process control system are required to accommodate the capacity increase.
Dofasco indicates the acid regeneration plants’ original design, which was based on the fluidized bed process, makes this capacity upgrade a cost-effective strategy for pickle liquor regeneration with virtually no impact on the environment.
The new acid regeneration plant will start up in mid 2005.
The UVK Engineering Companies supply steel pickling plants for carbon steel and stainless steel facilities worldwide. As part of the UVK policy, recovery of any waste streams which result from the pickling lines are either recovered by acid regeneration plants or treated in wastewater and waste air treatment systems.
