USW Local Authorizes Salaried Algoma Staffers to Strike
07/09/2007 - Members of the United Steelworkers' (USW) Local 2724, representing 586 salaried staff at Algoma Steel, have given a strong mandate to their negotiating team by voting in favor of strike action if their executive concludes that it is necessary to reach a contract settlement.

Earlier last week, members of USW Local 2251 gave the same mandate to its negotiating committee.
The USW says the local's negotiating team will continue to work toward a settlement before the July 31st contract deadline. However, it says that a number of issues still need to be resolved both in the contract language and monetary categories.
The USW is Canada's most diverse union, representing more than 280,000 men and women working in every sector of the economy.
