Upgrades on Tap for German BOF
11/04/2015 - Primetals Technologies has won an order from Germany’s Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann GmbH (HKM) to modernize the No. 2 basic oxygen furnace (LD) at the steelmaker’s Duisburg plant, Primetals has announced.
The project, which is to be executed in partnership with Buchinger Anlagen-Stahl-Rohrbau GmbH, will extend the furnace’s life and increase its availability, Primetals said. The order includes a new trunnion ring and upgrades to the tilting drive.
The furnace has a capacity of 300 metric tons.
Primetals said it will be responsible for the detail and will supply the new trunnion ring, which will have a service life of 30 years. As part of the work, it will replace the bull gear, pinion drive shafts and the gear bearings. Primetals also will supervise the installation, commissioning and restart of the furnace.
HKM’s plant is one of the largest iron and steel works in Germany and produces more than 1,000 different grades of steel each year, Primetals said. It has an annual production capacity of about 5.6 million metric tons of steel.
