United Steelworkers Form Canada-U.S. Unity Council at Evraz Operations
03/18/2011 - USW local unions representing workers at Evraz NA operations in the U.S. and Canada have formed a "Unity Council" to deal with the company on a common front.
Four United Steelworkers (USW) local unions, representing workers at Evraz NA operations in the U.S. and Canada, have formed a "Unity Council" to deal with the company on a common front.
The USW representatives agreed to form the Unity Council to formalize their relationship and to take steps to expand the council to include other Evraz NA workers, including those represented by other trade unions and those without union representation.
"This is an important step in bringing workers together across borders to share information, strategies and plans with respect to a common employer," said USW District 12 Director Robert LaVenture, the Unity Council's Chairman.
The new council was formed during two days of meetings this week in Las Vegas by USW leaders representing over 2,600 workers at Evraz steel and pipe plants in Pueblo, Col., Calgary, Alta., and Regina, Sask.
USW local unions that participated in the meeting were USW 6673 (Calgary), USW 5890 (Regina), USW Local 2102 (Pueblo) and USW 3267 (Pueblo).
