Union Workers at Republic Steel Ratify Labor Agreement
09/19/2016 - Members of the United Steelworkers have ratified a new, three-year labor agreement with Republic Steel, the union has announced.
The new agreement, which is retroactive to 15 August 2015, covers approximately 1,000 hourly production, maintenance, office and technical workers at the company's five facilities in Ohio, New York and Indiana.
David McCall, chairman of the union’s Republic Steel bargaining committee, said the agreement preserves wages and benefits without lowering living standards for employees and retirees.
"The contract reflects the hard work and solidarity of our negotiating committee, activists and members at each of the facilities," McCall said in a statement.
"Settling our differences with management at the table will enable both parties to focus on addressing the industry's real problems, such as global overcapacity and the unfair and often illegal foreign trade practices that depress prices, close plants and cost jobs."
