Union: Discussions Over U. S. Steel Canada's Future Ongoing
09/30/2015 - Mediated talks between United States Steel Corporation , the United Steelworkers union and others over the future of its Canadian operations are continuing behind closed doors, according to The Canadian Press news service.
The news service said the Steelworkers are unable to share details of discussions that have occurred over the last five days. However, the union said discussions are continuing, and it has called upon members to attend a public hearing before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on 7 and 8 October.
U. S. Steel Canada has been operating under creditor protection for a year. The judge presiding over the case ordered U. S. Steel,
U. S. Steel Canada (USSC), the union and other parties into mediation to hash out the operation’s future.
The business has been on the sales block, but with no offers that anyone could agree on, USSC has asked to stop the sales process.
It also is seeking permission to stop paying property taxes and to stop pension plan contributions and paying for retiree health insurance.
Meanwhile, U. S. Steel is planning to shift 180,000 annualized tons of production of higher-value auto steel to American mills. The union opposes the move.
