U.S. Trade Commission Pursues Cold Rolled Import Investigation
09/25/2015 - Producers from seven countries appear to be selling hot rolled coil at less than market value, undercutting American producers, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) has ruled.
On 24 September, the commission found that imports from Australia, Brazil, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, Turkey, and the United Kingdom appear to have harmed U.S. steelmakers. Therefore, further investigation is warranted, it ruled.
The commission also ruled that Brazil, Korea, and Turkey appear to be subsiding exports to the U.S.
The commission launched an investigation following a complaint from several U.S. producers, including AK Steel.
“We are pleased that the ITC has made a preliminary ruling against dumped and subsidized imports of hot rolled steel," said James L. Wainscott, AK Steel chairman and CEO, in a statement. "This ruling is an important step in the process to fight unfairly traded imports of hot rolled steel."
ArcelorMittal USA LLC, Nucor Corp., SSAB Enterprises LLC, Steel Dynamics Inc. and United States Steel Corporation also are part of the case.
With the exception of SSAB, the producers also have filed a trade case against some of the same countries over imported cold rolled steel. The commission voted to pursue that case earlier this month.
