U.S. Steelmakers Win Energy Department Research Grants
03/08/2019 - United States Steel Corporation, AK Steel Corp. and ArcelorMittal USA will share in US$1.2 million in federal funding, as well as in time on government supercomputers, for research into slab and hot strip production.
According to a U.S. Energy Department announcement, the steelmakers, in partnership with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, will each undertake a public-private research project aimed at solving a key manufacturing challenge through supercomputing. The award was made through the Energy Department’s High-Performance Computing for Manufacturing program.
According to the department, the AK Steel and U. S. Steel research projects relate to the hot strip mill; ArcelorMittal is investigating more efficient production of defect-free slabs.
U. S. Steel said in a statement that its project will attempt to enhance the production model used in making advanced high-strength steel.
“We are looking forward to collaborating with Lawrence Livermore National Lab High-Performance Computing modeling, simulation and data experts to address key manufacturing challenges in the production of advanced high-strength steel,” said U. S. Steel senior research fellow Kevin Zeik.
