U. S. Steel Tubular Operations VP to Retire

United States Steel Corp. announced the retirement of Joseph Alvarado, Vice President—Tubular Operations and President of the company's U. S. Steel Tubular Products, Inc. subsidiary, effective February 28, 2009.
 
The business unit will report directly to Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer John H. Goodish until Alvarado’s successor has been named.
 
"Joe's experience in both the steelmaking and tubular products industries has been a great benefit to us since he joined U. S. Steel in 2007 to lead the integration of the operations of Lone Star with U. S. Steel's Tubular Division," said Goodish. "We thank Joe for his contributions to our company during the critical integration period and extend our best wishes to him."
 
Alvarado, 56, has spent his entire career in steelmaking, beginning in 1976 when he joined Inland Steel's finance department. He moved to Inland's sales department in 1979, where he progressed through increasingly responsible management positions in sales and customer service. Alvarado was named Manager—Strategic Planning in 1985; Manager—Plate Production in 1986; and Manager—Automotive Marketing and International Development in 1987. He was appointed Vice President and General Manager—Sales and Marketing for Inland Bar Co. in 1988, and in 1995 was named President.
 
Alvarado assumed the role of Executive Vice President—Commercial at the former Birmingham Steel Co. in Birmingham, Ala., in 1997, later moving to Ispat North America Inc. (1998) as Vice President—Long Products Sales and Marketing. In 2004, Alvarado accepted the positions of President and Chief Operating Officer at Dallas, Texas-based Lone Star Technologies, Inc., holding those positions until June 2007 when U. S. Steel acquired Lone Star and related companies and named Alvarado Vice President—Tubular Operations and President, U. S. Steel Tubular Products, Inc.
 
Alvarado currently serves on the board of directors of the American Petroleum Institute and the Petroleum Equipment Suppliers Association, and he is a former board member of the Metals Service Center Institute. He is also a member of the Independent Petroleum Association of America.
 
Alvarado graduated from the University of Notre Dame (Ind.) in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in economics and earned a master's degree in business administration from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., in 1976.
