U. S. Steel to Consolidate Production for Greater Efficiency

United States Steel Corporation announced the temporarily idling of a number of its facilities over the next several weeks, as it concentrates production at its Mon Valley, Gary, Fairfield and Lake Erie Works.

"We believe that our difficult decision to temporarily consolidate our production is a necessary response to current market conditions," said U. S. Steel Chairman and CEO John Surma.

Facilities slated for temporary idling include the company’s Great Lakes Works near Detroit, Mich.; and Granite City Works near St. Louis, Mo., as well as its Keetac iron ore mining and pelletizing facility in Keewatin, Minn.

Approximately 3500 employees will be affected by the move, which follows the company's ongoing review and analysis of market conditions and their impact on customers' orders. The company said the temporary restructuring will allow it to safely and more efficiently meet customer demand.

Unions representing workers at these facilities have been notified of the temporary idling and Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notices will be filed.
