U. S. Steel's Granite City Works To Close in Mid-February, Union Official Says
12/11/2015 - United States Steel Corporation will begin winding down its Granite City Works in Illinois later this month, with workers beginning to be sent home on 27 December, according to the Belleville News-Democrat newspaper.
U. S. Steel announced in November that it was temporarily idling the integrated steel works on account of market conditions.
United Steelworkers Local 1899 President Dan Simmons told the newspaper that it appears that hot strip production will run for about three weeks, and the plant will then begin working through its slab inventory.
“That will roughly get us into the third week of January. After that, it will take four or five days before the slab inventory runs out. Then, we will shut that down.”
He said Granite City’s cold mill is expected to close about two weeks later, leaving only a skeleton crew on the payroll. He said he believes the facility will be fully mothballed by mid-February.
