After completing his undergraduate degree in 1985, he joined the company full time, serving as a turn foreman in plant’s cold rolling mill. Veitch progressed through managerial positions in several areas of the facility's finishing operations before joining National Steel in 1996.
He returned to the company when U. S. Steel acquired National Steel in 2003, when he was named division manager of sheet products for National's finishing facility in Portage, Ind., USA. Later that year, he was named plant manager of the Mon Valley Works' Irvin plant, where he was responsible for all rolling and finishing operations at the facility as well as the galvanizing line at Mon Valley Works' Fairless plant near Philadelphia, Pa., USA.
In 2006, Veitch advanced to vice president – operations at U. S. Steel Kosice and oversaw all day-to-day activities at the company's facilities in the Slovak Republic. He was appointed vice president and general director – U. S. Steel Serbia in 2007. In that role he was responsible for all aspects of U. S. Steel's three Serbian operations in Smederevo, Sabac and Kucevo.
Veitch holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and a master's degree in management, both from Purdue University.
At Granite City, Veitch will be succeeded by Michael Terry, who has been named acting plant manager. Terry will report to Matthew Perkins, general manager of Gary Works.
Terry began his career in 1975 as a management trainee at Granite City and progressed through a series of increasingly responsible positions in rolling and finishing operations and maintenance.
In 1983, Terry moved to engineering and served in various positions at Granite City as well as at the Great Lakes Works, the Midwest plant and National Steel's corporate headquarters in both Pittsburgh and Mishawaka, Ind. In 1997, he returned to operations as director of tin mill products and, later, as director of sheet and coated products.

In 2014, Terry was assigned to the Sparrow's Point caster project at Granite City. At the conclusion of the installation, he moved to his current role as division manager of rolling and finishing.
