U. S. Steel Names General Manager-Tubular Operations

United States Steel Corp. announced the promotion of Kurt A. Barshick to the position of General Manager – Tubular Operations, effective May 1, 2012.
 
In his new position, Barshick (39) will be responsible for the day-to-day operations at four of U. S. Steel's tubular products manufacturing facilities: Fairfield Tubular Operations in Fairfield, Ala.; Lorain Tubular Operations in Lorain, Ohio; McKeesport Tubular Operations in McKeesport, Pa.; and Texas Operations Division in Lone Star, Texas.
 
Barshick started his career at U. S. Steel in 1993 as a co-op student at the company's Mon Valley Works near Pittsburgh. He joined the company full time in 1995, and advanced through a series of increasingly responsible positions at Mon Valley Works' Pittsburgh-area facilities through 2006, with areas of responsibility including steelmaking operations at Edgar Thomson, rolling operations at Irvin, and finishing operations at Fairless. He advanced to Division Manager of Coke and Iron Production at U. S. Steel Canada's Lake Erie Works in 2008, and was appointed to his most recent position — Plant Manager at Fairfield Tubular Operations in Fairfield, Ala. — in 2009.
 
Barshick graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1995 with a bachelor's degree in Materials Science.

U. S. Steel has four research and development facilities dedicated to advancing the boundaries of steelmaking: the Research and Technology Center in Munhall, Pa.; the Automotive Center, a research and sales facility in Troy, Mich.; the U. S. Steel Tubular Products Innovation and Technology Center in Houston, Texas; and USSE Research in Košice.

U. S. Steel has tubular operations in Bellville, Houston, Hughes Springs, and Lone Star Texas; Pine Bluff, Ark.; Fairfield, Ala.; Lorain, Ohio; and McKeesport, Pa. The company also maintains tubular products sales offices in Denver, Co., Dallas and Houston, Texas, and Calgary, Alberta Canada.

U. S. Steel produces coke at Mon Valley Works’ Clairton Plant near Pittsburgh as well as at Gary Works, Granite City Works, Lake Erie Works, Hamilton Works and U. S. Steel Košice. The company operates two iron ore mines through its Minnesota Ore Operations on the Mesabi Iron Range in northern Minnesota: one in Mt. Iron (Minntac) and one in Keewatin (Keetac). Both mine an iron-bearing rock called taconite and process it into concentrated iron ore pellets, which are converted to liquid iron in the company’s blast furnaces.

U. S. Steel is also involved in railroad and barge transportation services through its Transtar, Inc. subsidiary and real estate operations through its USS Real Estate division.
