U. S. Steel Joins Effort to Develop Low-Carbon Industrial Hub in Northern Appalachia
02/07/2022 - United States Steel Corporation has teamed up with six major industrial players in an effort to establish a new hub for decarbonization technology in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
According to an official press release, the multi-sector industrial alliance envisions the Northern Appalachian region of the U.S. as an epicenter for carbon capture, utilization and storage technology, and green hydrogen production.
U. S. Steel will work together with EQT Corp., Equinor, GE Gas Power, Marathon Petroleum, Shell Polymers and Mitsubishi Power to establish a network of public-private partnerships, engage key stakeholders and attract transformative investments to the region.
“As U. S. Steel builds momentum toward our ambitious goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, the opportunity to establish a low-carbon industrial hub in this region is cause for optimism,” commented Richard Fruehauf, U. S. Steel’s senior vice president and chief strategy and sustainability officer. “This Tri-State region has incredible assets, not only a highly skilled and experienced workforce, but also world-class universities, national laboratories and deep-rooted industrial capabilities.”
