U.S. Steel Exports Rise in October

“American-made steel exports increased in October as tonnages returned to more normal 2013 levels.  The month-to-month comparisons showed that exports to all regions improved in October compared to September.  While it is possible that some of the increase represented catch-up of processing by the government due to the shutdown, the data do reflect the levels experienced during much of 2013, especially to our NAFTA partners,” said Richard Chriss, AIIS executive director.

For the year-to-date period, exports in 2013 were 7.7% lower than in 2012.  Exports in October of 2013 compared to October 2012 were down 4.4%.  “Steel exports in 2013 remain below 2012, as world demand for American-made steel has declined in all major international steel markets, especially the NAFTA market, which makes up the bulk of our steel exports,” concluded Chriss.

Total steel exports in October 2013 were 1.133 million tons compared to 1.022 million tons in September 2013, a 10.9% increase, and a 4.4% decrease compared to October 2012. According to year-to-date figures, exports decreased 7.7% compared to 2012, or from 11.777 million tons in 2012 to 10.872 million tons in 2013.
