In an announcement Tuesday, United States Steel Corporation said PPG chairman and chief executive Michael H. McGarry has been elected the steelmaker’s board of directors.

McGarry has been with PPG since 1981, when he was hired on as an engineer at the company’s Lake Charles, La., USA, chemicals complex. He was named senior vice president of the commodity chemicals reporting segment in 2008 and was elected executive vice president in 2012. He was named chief operating officer in 2014 and was promoted to the top spot in the following year. 

McGarry holds a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Texas and completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.
