U.S. Steel Chairman Elected to National Safety Council Board
11/01/2011 - The National Safety Council announced the election of U.S. Steel Chairman and CEO John P. Surma and three other new members to its Board of Directors.
The National Safety Council announced the election of U.S. Steel Chairman and CEO John P. Surma and three other new members to its Board of Directors. The announcement was made during the group’s annual meeting in Philadelphia.
“The NSC Board is pleased to welcome these gentlemen to our team,” said Kent McElhattan, Chairman of the NSC Board of Directors and Chairman of Industrial Scientific Corp. “The diverse experience and expertise they bring will surely be an asset to furthering the Council’s mission of saving lives and preventing injuries.”
The four individuals accepting two-year terms are:
· Daniel Frank, President, Wheels Services, Wheels Inc.
· Michael R. Gambrell, Executive Vice President, The Dow Chemical Co.
· John P. Surma, Chairman and CEO, United States Steel Corp.
· Jeffrey J. Woodbury, Vice President, Safety, Security, Health and Environment, Exxon Mobil Corp.
Daniel Frank has filled numerous roles at Wheels Inc. since first joining in 1986. He also is on the Board of Directors of the American Automobile Leasing Association, currently serving as Vice President of Federal Affairs. Frank holds a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Stanford University.
Michael Gambrell joined Dow in 1976 and has held leadership and executive leadership roles in both business portfolios and corporate functions. He serves on the Board of Directors and Audit Committee of TRW Automotive Holding Corp., and is a member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors for the National Association of Manufacturers. He also serves on the U.S. Department of Commerce Manufacturing Council, is a member of the University of Michigan Engineering Advisory Council, and is a distinguished Director Emeritus of the U.S.-India Business Council. Gambrell holds a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
John Surma joined United States Steel in 2002 and was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO in 2006. He was appointed by President Obama to the president’s Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiation and currently serves as Vice Chairman. He also sits on the Board of Directors for The Bank of New York Mellon Corp., the worldsteel Association, the American Iron and Steel Institute, the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, and the Allegheny County (Pa.) Parks Foundation. Surma, a current member of the National Petroleum Council and The Business Council, received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Pennsylvania State University in 1976.
Jeffrey Woodbury was named Vice President for Safety, Security, Health and Environment for Exxon Mobil Corp. in July 2011. He began his career with ExxonMobil in 1983 and has held various technical, planning, operations and management positions in the United States and internationally. Woodbury sits on the Board of Councilors of the University of Southern California Viterbi School of Engineering and is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. He graduated from the University of Southern California with both a Bachelors and Masters of Science degree in petroleum engineering.
