04/20/2007 - United States Steel has appointed George A. Manos to the position of President - USS Real Estate.
United States Steel Corp. has appointed George A. Manos to the position of President—USS Real Estate. He succeeds Garrett F. Hurley, who elected to retire at the end of March after 34 years of dedicated service to the company.
In his new position, Manos will be responsible for the management, development and marketing of U. S. Steel's domestic real estate assets, including the Keystone Industrial Port Complex in Fairless Hills, Pa., a proposed residential development on Lake Vermillion in Minnesota, numerous residential, commercial and industrial developments in Alabama, lakefront property on Chicago's South Side, the Swan Point community development in southern Maryland, and other land holdings in several states.
Manos will report to Christopher J. Navetta, Senior Vice President—Procurement, Logistics and Diversified Businesses. The appointment was effective April 1.
"Effective oversight of our real estate division calls for an individual with a diverse skill set," said U. S. Steel Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer John H. Goodish. "George's experience in a variety of disciplines, including sales, marketing, operations, human resources, and public and governmental affairs, will be a real asset to USS Real Estate and makes him a solid choice for this position."
Manos, 56, began his career at U. S. Steel in 1973 in the Commercial Department at the company's Cleveland sales office. He advanced through a series of increasingly responsible management positions in operations, sales, marketing and personnel at the Cleveland office, Lorain (Ohio) Works and the company's Pittsburgh headquarters. He returned to Lorain Works in 1986 when he was named Manager of Marketing and Business Planning, and was later promoted to Assistant to the President (1989), a position from which he played a significant role in the formation of U. S. Steel's then-joint venture with Kobe Steel of Japan—USS/Kobe Steel Company. In 1996, Manos was named Vice President of Business Processes and Public Affairs for USS/Kobe.
In 1999, Manos was named director-administrative, governmental and legal affairs for Republic Technologies International, a company comprised of USS/Kobe and Republic Engineered Steels and Bar Technologies. He remained in that position until 2000, when he transferred to the former USX Corp.'s St. Paul, Minn., governmental affairs office to direct the company's legislative activities in the state as Manager—Governmental Affairs. In 2002, Manos was named Manager—Public Affairs, and in September 2003 was promoted to General Manager—Human Resources in September 2003, a position he held until his recent appointment.
Manos graduated from Ohio Northern University in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering.
