Jan. 11, 2007 — United States Steel Corp. announced the appointment of Scott H. Coleman as General Manager of Minnesota Ore Operations. In his new position, Coleman will report to George F. Babcoke, Vice President—Plant Operations, and will be responsible for the Minntac mine and pelletizing operation in Mountain Iron, Minn., and the Keetac mine and pelletizing operation in Keewatin, Minn.

Coleman succeeds Dennis G. Quirk, who has been named Plant Manager of the Edgar Thomson Plant, the primary operation of U. S. Steel's Mon Valley Works. Quirk, who will relocate to the Pittsburgh area, will report to Anton Lukac, General Manager of Mon Valley Works.

Both appointments are effective immediately.

Steel, Dennis and Scott have each demonstrated strong leadership and management skills in a wide range of steelmaking operations and a willingness to serve the company where they are needed," said John H. Goodish, U. S. Steel’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. "In their new assignments, their experience, leadership ability and technical expertise will continue to contribute to our company's strong performance and enhance our organizational strength."

Coleman (40) began his career with U. S. Steel in 1994 as a shift manager in the finishing operations at Fairfield (Ala.) Works. He advanced through increasingly responsible positions in operating and maintenance of the finishing operations and was named Senior Area Manager—Coating and Finishing in October 2000. In 2003, Coleman accepted an assignment as Deputy General Manager—Finishing Operations at U. S. Steel Kosice in the Slovak Republic. He returned to Fairfield Works in 2005 as Plant Manager—Finishing Operations. His most recent position was Plant Manager of Keewatin Taconite.

Coleman earned a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial management from the University of Akron, graduating in 1989. He is a long-time member of the Association of Iron and Steel Technology and is a member of the board of directors of the Iron Mining Association of Minnesota.

Quirk (52) began his career with U. S. Steel in 1976 as a summer student trainee at the National-Duquesne Works, a tubular facility near Pittsburgh. He was named Turn Foreman—Finishing Operations in 1978 and Turn Foreman—Forming and Welding in 1981. In 1983, Quirk moved to Fairfield (Ala.) Works when he was named General Foreman in the seamless pipe mill. He moved through a series of increasingly responsible positions in tubular and flat-rolled operations and was named Manager—Tubular Operations at Fairfield Works in 2001.

When U. S. Steel acquired Granite City (Ill.) Works in 2003, Quirk was appointed Plant Manager—Finishing Operations, a position he held until being named General Manager of Minnesota Ore Operations in 2005.

Quirk graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in 1977 with bachelor's degrees in both industrial management and economics. He is currently co-chairman of the board of directors of the Iron Mining Association of Minnesota.
