U. S. Steel Announces Two Executive Appointments
01/05/2023 - United States Steel Corporation has added two new executives to the C-suite, naming Christian Gianni as senior vice president and chief technology officer and John Gordon as senior vice president, raw materials and sustainable resources.
U. S. Steel said in a statement that the appointments will help it accelerate its Best for All strategy and improve its ability to deliver solutions to its customers.
In his role, Gianni will lead the company’s innovation and product development efforts and work on enhancing the company’s manufacturing capability. He joins U. S. Steel from Deka Research & Development Corp., where he served as the executive leader for product development and manufacturing. Previously, he served 11 years at Whirlpool Corp., where he held roles across engineering, product development and technology.
“As we pursue our Best for All strategy, Christian is uniquely qualified to help position U. S. Steel as an early adopter and innovator as we move toward the future with purpose and with speed,” said U. S. Steel president and chief executive David B. Burritt.
For his part, Gordon will oversee U. S. Steel’s raw material supply chains and will work on expanding commercial opportunities within the metallics space.
Prior to his appointment, he spent four years at Johnson Matthey, a global leader in sustainable technologies, culminating in his position as managing director of the Platinum Group Metals Services division as well as president, Johnson Matthey (USA).
Before his tenure there, he served as global head of mining for Clariant Mining Solutions, a leading provider of flotation chemicals and emulsifiers for explosives to the mining industry.
“As we continue to advance our metallics strategy, we have an opportunity to become increasingly self-sufficient,” Burritt said.
“John’s deep background in mining and metallics, combined with his operational experience, will enable us to reshape our approach to raw materials, especially our iron ore operations, at this critical point in our transformation.”
