U. S. Steel Announces New General Manager for Gary Works

Aug. 25, 2006 — United States Steel Corp. announced that Michael S. Williams has been named General Manager of Gary Works, succeeding Raymond R. Terza, who has been appointed Managing Director—Coke Battery Assessment, Reliability and Rehabilitation.

In addition to managing day-to-day operations at U.S. Steel's largest integrated steelmaking facility, Williams will have responsibility for East Chicago Tin in East Chicago, Ind., and U.S. Steel's Midwest Plant, a finishing operation in Portage, Ind. The appointment is effective September 1.

"Gary Works has more than twice the steelmaking capability of our second-largest U.S. plant, which makes effectively managing it and its associated operations among the most challenging jobs at U.S. Steel," says U.S. Steel Chairman and CEO John P. Surma. "With a background in all aspects of both aluminum and steel production, and extensive financial and managerial experience, we are delighted that Mike has agreed to return to U.S. Steel to run our flagship operation. We are confident that under his leadership Gary Works will continue to achieve new levels of productivity, quality and service."

Williams comes to U.S. Steel from Special Metals Corp. of Cleveland, Ohio, where he served as Vice President—Commercial Products. He served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Ormet Corp. from 2002 to 2006. Williams joined Ormet, an aluminum producer headquartered in Wheeling, W.Va., in 1999 and rose through a variety of increasingly responsible positions in operations and sales roles before being named President. From 1992 to 1999, Williams worked at U.S. Steel Gary Works where he was Division Manager for several operations, including hot rolling, steel producing and systems and process control. He has also held managerial positions with Armco Steel Corp. and Koppers Corp.

Williams earned a bachelor's degree in information science with a minor in economics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1983. He is also a graduate of Indiana University's Executive Management Program.
