U. S. Steel Announces Management Changes in Commercial Organizations

United States Steel Corp. announced a series of management changes within its North American and European commercial organizations, including the return of John B. Peters from U. S. Steel Kosice in the Slovak Republic to serve as General Manager—North American Flat-Rolled Customer Service.
 
In his new position, Peters will oversee North American flat-rolled customer service functions for the company, including order and technical service and non-prime product sales. He will report to J. James Kutka Jr., Senior Vice President—Sales & Customer Service.
 
Peter J. Alvarado will replace Peters as Vice President—Commercial, Europe. In his new position, Alvarado will assume responsibility for all commercial activity related to U. S. Steel's European operations. He will report to George F. Babcoke, Senior Vice President—European Operations & President of U. S. Steel Kosice.
 
Bert J. Phillips will fill Alvarado's role as General Manager—Automotive. In his new position, Phillips will oversee sales and product development efforts for automotive applications, which are based at U. S. Steel's Automotive Center in Troy, Mich. He will report to Joseph R. Scherrbaum Jr., Vice President—Sales.
 
The moves will be effective May 1.
 
Peters, 45, joined U. S. Steel in 1985 as a Management Associate in the commercial department in Houston, Texas. From 1987 to 1994, he held increasingly responsible sales positions in tubular products and flat-rolled products for automotive applications. Peters moved into flat-rolled products marketing in 1994, serving as an Industry Manager for the appliance, container, and domestic and commercial equipment markets.
 
Peters was named Manager-Sales, Automotive at U. S. Steel's Detroit sales office in 1996, and advanced to General Manager-Automotive in 2001. He relocated to Pittsburgh in 2004 after he was named General
Manager—Appliance, Tin and Container, and assumed his most recent position, Vice President—Commercial, Europe, in 2005.
 
Peters graduated from Indiana University at Bloomington with a bachelor's degree in business.
 
Alvarado, 51, began his career with U. S. Steel in 1981 as a Metallurgical Engineer at the company's Research and Technology Center in Monroeville, Pa. In 1985, he transferred into marketing and sales and advanced through a series of increasingly responsible positions covering a broad range of flat-rolled products. He moved into automotive sales in 1996 as a Senior Sales Engineer, and in 1998 was named Director of sales for Automotive. He advanced to his most recent position, General Manager—Automotive in 2005.
 
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Alvarado received a bachelor's degree in metallurgical and materials engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1978 and earned master's degrees in both metallurgical engineering and business administration from the University of Pittsburgh in 1981.
 
Phillips, 48, joined U. S. Steel in 1988 as an Employee Relations Staff Associate. He moved into the company's commercial organization in 1989, progressing through a series of increasingly responsible positions over the next eight years. After assignments in product and facility marketing, Phillips was named Manager—Sales and Service for Industrial Equipment and Construction Applications in 1999. He relocated to the Automotive Center in 2004, after advancing to his most recent position, Manager—Automotive Sales. In this role, Phillips has overseen the company's relationships with select automotive customers.
 
Phillips graduated from The Pennsylvania State University in 1983 with a bachelor's degree in psychology.
