U.S. Steel Announces Executive Appointments in Europe, North America

United States Steel Corp. announced several new appointments this week, including Robert J. Beltz as Vice President–Commercial, Europe, and two advancements in the company's North American sales and marketing organizations. All appointments were effective Feb. 1.
 
In his new position, Beltz (41) assumes responsibility for all commercial activity related to U. S. Steel's European operations. Beltz, who will report to George F. Babcoke, Senior Vice President–European Operations and President of U. S. Steel Kosice, succeeds Peter J. Alvarado, who has concluded his assignment in Europe and is returning to the United States to a role that is to be announced in the near future. Beltz’s appointment was effective Feb. 1.
 
In its North American sales and marketing organizations, the company has appointed Robert Y. Kopf III as General Manager–North American Flat-Rolled Marketing, succeeding Robert J. Beltz. Kopf will be succeeded in his current position by William L. Reder, who has been appointed as General Manager–Sales.  
 
In his new position, Kopf (43) will oversee industry market strategies, product mix distribution and pricing for U. S. Steel's flat-rolled operations in the United States and Canada. He will report to Senior Vice President–North American Flat-Roll Operations Michael S. Williams.  
 
In his new position, Reder (45) will be responsible for sales activities related to North American flat-rolled products customers in the appliance, electrical, construction, sheet converter, tin and container markets. He will also oversee semi-finished product sales as well as sales of North American flat-rolled products outside the United States. Reder will report to Vice President-Sales Joseph R. Scherrbaum Jr.  
 
 
Beltz joined the company in 1990 as a Management Associate in accounting and finance.  Following two years in the audit department, he moved into the company's commercial organization (1993) and advanced through increasingly responsible positions over the next 14 years, including managerial roles in automotive sales and marketing at U. S. Steel's Automotive Center in Troy, Mich.  
 
In February 2007, Beltz was named Director–Market Analysis and Strategy, later advancing to Director–Industry Marketing. He assumed his most recent position, General Manager–North American Flat-Rolled Marketing, in April 2008.
 
Beltz graduated from Duquesne University in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in accounting, and earned a master's degree in business administration from the University of Michigan-Flint in 1997.  
 
Kopf joined U. S. Steel in 1988 as a Management Associate in the sales organization. Over the next 16 years, he progressed through a series of increasingly responsible positions in sales, customer service and marketing management at U. S. Steel offices in Columbia, S.C., Cincinnati, Ohio, Chicago, Ill., Troy, Mich., and Pittsburgh, Pa.  
 
In 2004, Kopf was appointed Managing Director–Sales and Marketing for U. S. Steel Kosice. He returned to Pittsburgh in 2007 to serve as Manager–Sales in the tin and container sales organization, assuming additional responsibilities as Director–International Sales in March 2008.  He was named to his most recent position, General Manager–Sales, in January 2009.  
 
Kopf graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in communication.  He is a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and currently serves as chairman of the Steel Packaging Council, an AISI Steel Market Development Institute committee. He is also a member of the Canned Food Alliance's executive committee.  
 
Reder's U. S. Steel career began in 1988 as a Management Associate in sales. Over the next 19 years, he advanced through management roles in the company's sales and marketing organizations at locations in Philadelphia, Pa., Troy, Mich., and Oakbrook, Ill.  
 
In 2007, Reder was appointed Managing Director–Sales and Marketing for U. S. Steel Kosice. He returned to Pittsburgh in 2009 when he advanced to his most recent position, Manager–Sales in the tin and container sales organization, where he was also responsible for sales of semi-finished products and North American flat-rolled products outside the United States.  
 
Reder earned a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Pittsburgh in 1988.
