U. S. Steel, USWA Reach Tentative Agreements Covering Domestic Flat-Rolled, Iron Ore, Some Tubular
08/13/2008 - United States Steel reaches a tentative agreement with the USW on a new four-year labor contract covering U. S. Steel's domestic flat-rolled and iron ore mining facilities as well as tubular operations in Lorain, Ohio, Fairfield, Ala., and Lone Star, Texas.
United States Steel Corp. announced a tentative agreement with the United Steelworkers (USW) on a new four-year labor contract at U. S. Steel's domestic flat-rolled and iron ore mining facilities as well as tubular operations in Lorain, Ohio, and Fairfield, Ala.
The new contract, which covers approximately 16,000 USW-represented employees, would replace the current contract, which expires Sept. 1, 2008.
"We are pleased to have reached a tentative agreement with the United Steelworkers on a competitive four-year contract well in advance of the expiration of our current contract,” said U. S. Steel Chairman and CEO John P. Surma, commenting on the announcement. “We value our ongoing relationship with the USW and appreciate the contributions that our employees make to the success of our business. We believe that this agreement is in the best interests of our company and all of our stakeholders.”
The company said that its U. S. Steel Tubular Products, Inc. subsidiary also reached a tentative agreement with the United Steelworkers (USW) on a new four-year labor contract. The new contract would cover approximately 900 USW-represented employees at U. S. Steel Tubular Products, Inc.'s Texas Operations Div., a welded tubular products facility in Lone Star, Texas. If ratified, it would replace a current contract that expires Sept. 1, 2008, and remains subject to ratification by the United Steelworkers.
"We are pleased that a tentative agreement was reached with the United Steelworkers on a competitive four-year contract for our Texas Operations Division, which became part of our company just over one year ago,” said Surma.
“This agreement will allow us to build upon the significant progress that has been made to date,” added Surma. “We believe that this agreement is in the best interests of our company and all of our stakeholders.”
Both new agreements are subject to ratification by the United Steelworkers. The company said that further details about the tentative agreements would be made available after completion of the ratification process.
