U.S. Commerce Department OKs Rebar Duties
05/17/2017 - The U.S. Commerce Department has finalized tariffs on rebar from Japan and Turkey, affirming that producers in those countries have undercut domestic prices.
In a final determination announced Tuesday, the department said Japanese producers will face anti-dumping duties of between 206.4% and 209.5%. Turkish producers, meanwhile, are facing anti-dumping duties of between 5.4% and 8.2%. They also will face anti-subsidy duties of 16.2%.
“The United States can no longer sit back and watch as its essential industries like steel are destroyed by foreign companies unfairly selling their products in the U.S. markets,” Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said in a statement. “We will continue to take action on behalf of U.S. industry to defend American businesses, their workers, and our communities adversely impacted by unfair imports.”
In 2016, rebar imports from Japan and Turkey were valued at about US$608 million. The case arose on a complaint from Byer Steel Group Inc., Commercial Metals Co., Gerdau, Nucor Corp. and Steel Dynamics Inc.
