U.S. and Canadian Service Center Shipments Show Modest Recovery in September
10/16/2013 - In September, U.S. Shipments of both steel and aluminum displayed their highest year-over-year growth so far in 2013. Canadian shipments returned to a small positive growth rate as well, the Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) reported in its latest metals activity report.
U.S. Service Center Activity
U.S. service center steel shipments in September 2013 increased by 9.8% from September 2012. Steel product inventories decreased 8.4% from September a year ago. At the current shipping rate, this represents 2.4 months of supply in inventory.
U.S. service center shipments of aluminum products in September increased by 8.2% from the same month in 2012. Inventories of aluminum products decreased 3.7% from September a year ago. At the current shipping rate, this represents 3.0 months of supply.
Canadian Service Center Activity
Canadian service center shipments of steel products in September 2013 increased by 1.1% from September 2012. Steel product inventories decreased 20.4% from September a year ago. At the current shipping rate, this represents 2.7 months of supply in inventory.
Canadian service center aluminum shipments in September increased 1.1% from the same month in 2012. Inventories of aluminum products decreased 11.1% from September a year ago. At the current shipping rate, this represents 2.8 months of supply.
