U.S. and Canadian Service Center Shipments Continued to Decline in June
07/18/2013 - U.S. and Canadian service center shipments of both steel and aluminum continued to decline in June at rates that were similar to those displayed in May, the Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) reports.
U.S. Service Center Activity
U.S. service center steel shipments in June 2013 decreased by 4.7% from June 2012. Steel product inventories decreased 1.0% from last month. At the current shipping rate, this represents a decrease of 7.6% in months of inventory on hand from a year ago.
In June, U.S. service center shipments of aluminum products decreased by 5.4% from the same month in 2012. Inventories of aluminum products declined 2.7% from June a year ago.
Canadian Service Center Activity
Canadian service centers shipments of steel products in June 2013 decreased by 14.6% from June 2012. Steel product inventories decreased 7.4% from June a year ago. At the current shipping rate, this represents an increase of 8.5% from a year ago in months of inventory on hand.
In June, Canadian service center aluminum shipments decreased 4.8% from the same month in 2012. Inventories of aluminum products decreased 1.9% from June a year ago. At the current shipping rate, this represents an increase of 3.0% from a year ago.
