Trump Targets Key Imports With New Tariffs

“I’ll… be placing tariffs on steel, aluminum and copper and things that we need for our military things. We have to bring production back to our country,” Trump said in a speech before House Republicans on Monday.

Trump said he has not settled on a figure for tariffs on steel and other metals. “It'll be enough to protect our country,” he told reporters on Air Force One.

Trump also said his plans to pursue a baseline universal tariff for all imports will be moving forward. The Financial Times reported that while treasure secretary Scott Bessant suggested a 2.5% universal tariff, it could eventually reach the 20% tariffs Trump pledged while campaigning.

The president is reportedly seeking a universal tariff rate significantly higher than 2.5%.
