Trump's Steel Tariffs Force Gerdau to Rethink Mexican Mill Investment
02/24/2025 - Gerdau has postponed a final investment decision on a new Mexican special steel plant and may instead move to boost output in the U.S. in light of President Donald Trump’s steel tariffs, the Reuters news service reports.
Gerdau last year said it was exploring the possibility of constructing a 600,000-metric-ton special steel mill in Mexico and had planned to make a final decision by the end of 2024. But now, it’s deferred a decision until July, according to Reuters.
"We are reviewing all our analyses in light of what is happening," Gerdau chief executive officer Gustavo Werneck told investors during an earnings call last week, according to Reuters. "Special steel is a very important segment for us in the Americas."
