Trump Reciprocal Tariffs Won’t Apply to Steel Already Subject to Section 232 Tariff

Trump last month expanded the Section 232 tariffs he imposed during his first term to include tariffs on hundreds of finished products made with imported steel and aluminum. But he stopped short of layering on the additional reciprocal tariffs ordered for major U.S. trading partners, The Journal said.

U.S. steel industry representatives applauded the most recent tariff announcement.

“AISI thanks President Trump for standing up for American workers by restoring fairness in international trade and addressing non-reciprocal trade relationships,” said American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) president and chief executive officer Kevin Dempsey.

“American steel producers are all too familiar with the detrimental effects of unfair foreign trade practices on domestic industries and their workers.”

Steel Manufacturers Association president Philip K. Bell said Trump is a champion of the domestic steel industry.

“His America First Trade Policy is designed to fight the unfair trade that has harmed American workers and weakened manufacturing in the United States. The recently reinvigorated 232 steel tariffs have already started creating American jobs and bolstering the domestic steel industry.”
