Tosyalı SULB Awards CDRI Plant Order to Midrex, SMS group
02/25/2025 - Tosyalı SULB Steel Industries has turned to Midrex Technologies, Inc. and SMS group to supply phase one of the world’s largest direct reduced iron (DRI) complex investments with the construction of a 2.5-million-metric-ton cold DRI (CDRI) plant in Benghazi, Libya.
According to a press release, the plant will use MIDREX Flex® technology, allowing it to start operations with natural gas and transition to hydrogen as it becomes available for greener steel production. The companies estimate that once the plant is complete, Tosyalı SULB will be one of the key suppliers of DRI in the world.
“With MIDREX technology, we will leverage the flexible use of natural gas and hydrogen to support the production of low-carbon, high-quality steel, creating value for both the region and the world,” said Fuat Tosyalı, chairman of Tosyalı Holding.
“This investment is not just a production facility but a strategic contribution to Libya’s economic development and industrial infrastructure,” said Ahmed Gadalla, chairman of Libya United Steel Company for Iron & Steel Industry (SULB).
This project marks the third collaboration between Tosyalı, Midrex and SMS group, as they previously collaborated on two DRI plants owned and operated by Tosyalı Alergie in Algeria.
