To Win Gold, Winter Olympians Turn to Steel
02/04/2022 - At this year’s Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, many elite athletes will rely on the strength and durability of voestalpine advanced steel grades as they push the limits of their disciplines.
According to voestalpine, steels used in professional winter sports equipment must withstand extreme conditions such as ice, snow and low temperatures while also ensuring optimal speed and durability.
To help meet the challenges faced by Olympic-level skiers, voestalpine produces a high-performance steel wire used by one of the only manufacturers of ski edges in the world.
For manufacturers of professional ice skates, the steelmaker has developed a high-alloy composite grade that maintain skate performance even after repeated sharpening.
voestalpine Group has also worked in close collaboration with the German Olympic team to improve the performance of their luge equipment.
At the 2022 Beijing Winter Games, the German team’s equipment will feature an ultrahigh-strength steel grade designed to bear extreme stress even at speeds of more than 140 kilometers per hour. In addition, the German luges will feature an innovative anti-turbulence surface treatment developed by voestalpine subsidiary EschmannTextures.
