TMS International Receives 2011 Global Slag Environmental Award

TMS International Corp. announced that the company's Jewett, Texas, operation received the 2011 Global Slag Environmental Award from PRo Publications International Ltd., Surrey, U.K.

The Jewett operation received the award for implementing an environmentally friendly plan to control slag processing emissions and conserve water during the driest 12-month period in Texas since 1895 when the state began keeping rainfall records.

The award, which recognizes superior environmental performance, was presented by organizers of the Global Slag Conference, a leading international forum for slag-related business and technical issues

"The judging panel at Global Slag felt that the slag product processing plant in Jewett made strenuous efforts to reduce its environmental impact, both in terms of dust suppression and in terms of reduction in water usage and emissions, and that the plant was a worthy winner of the award," said Robert McCaffrey, Director, PRo Publications International Ltd.

"The company is truly honored to receive such a prestigious award," said Raymond Kalouche, Chief Operating Officer, and President and COO, Mill Services Group, TMS International. "We set high standards in the area of environmental responsibility to take care of our planet. All of the company's sites continually strive to develop and implement ideas to preserve and protect our environment, while creating value for our customers and shareholders. This is a well-deserved honor for the site and I congratulate the team in Jewett on being recognized for their outstanding effort."

Earlier this year, the company's U.K. operation in Scunthorpe, England, received the "Outstanding Achievement in Safety Award" from the North Lincolnshire Health and Safety Group. The company also received 46 safety awards from the National Slag Association in September.
