In a statement, SMS group said the mill is one of the most powerful of its kind in the world and the most powerful it has ever built. It is able to generate 109 MN over the 4.3-m roll barrel, SMS group said. 
 
“The rolling stand is characterized by high rolling forces and a correspondingly high forming capacity. The combination of a very large roll gap opening and the coaxial continuously variable crown technology with integrated powerful work roll bending is a new development that allows rolling stock with initial thicknesses of up to 960 mm to be processed, providing for an outstandingly wide product range,” SMS group said in a statement.
 
The mill is capable of rolling 700,000 metric tons annually. It can produce plates from 1,550 mm to 4,200 mm wide in thicknesses from 5 mm to 120 mm. Although it will produce stainless plate, it can roll carbon steels; low-alloyed steels; grades for ship, bridge and pressure vessel construction; weather- and wear-resistant plates; and API pipe grades.
 
The mill features a 4-high rolling stand with attached vertical edger. The edger is equipped with mechanical/hydraulic roll gap adjustment to achieve extremely tight tolerances. A newly developed, specially driven support roller table allow it to process short slabs.
