Timken Supplies Bearings for Large Vertical Slag Mill in China

The Timken Co. has supplied bearings for one of China's largest vertical slag mills, featuring a 5.7-meter (18.7-feet) grinding table. The mill was developed by CITIC Heavy Industries Co. Ltd., one of China's top manufacturers of cement-producing equipment.

According to CITIC, the new vertical slag mill is expected to produce up to 1.2 million tonnes of ground slag annually.

"Many sizable construction projects under way across China require large amounts of quality concrete," said Leong Fang, president of Timken China. "We work closely with CITIC and other customers in this important industry to make sure they can meet the growing demands of their customers for concrete and other construction materials."

Timken supplies both tapered and cylindrical roller bearings used in the LGMS5725 vertical slag mills that CITIC manufactures. Randy Ruan, General Manager of Process Industries for Timken China, said Timken won the business based on a combination of innovation and its understanding of CITIC's installation needs.

"For example, Timken® DuraSpexx™ bearings provided enhanced materials and specially designed roller profiles, and Timken engineering expertise pointed to utilizing CITIC's own grinding expertise for the spacer, thereby optimizing performance at the time of installation," Ruan said. "The basic material was further refined in the most recent order, allowing the customer to save costs and increase competitiveness while still exceeding the application performance criteria."

Timken provides a full range of solutions in friction management and mechanical power transmission to its cement industry customers. Timken tapered, spherical, and cylindrical roller bearings are widely applied to vertical mills and other key cement industry equipment worldwide. The company had sales of $5.2 billion in 2011 and approximately 21,000 people operating from locations in 30 countries.

CITIC Heavy Machinery Co. Ltd., a subsidiary company of CITIC Group, focuses on the R&D and manufacture of mining machinery and large-sized castings and forgings. The company employs 1,045 engineer technicians and 189 senior engineers. After nearly 50 years of development, it has become one of the largest heavy-machinery manufacturing enterprises in China.
