Timken Commissions MEERgauge® System from SMS Meer

The system displays the complete product cross-section on the basis of the light section method. With the new measurement technology, Timken can reduce tolerance deviations fully automatically during the rolling process on SBQ bars with diameters from 25 to 127 millimeters.

“The results produced by the MEERgauge® made a lasting impression on us. We can further improve our already very good rolling tolerances, particularly with the single-pass system running under load,” says Perry Petrullo, plant manager at Timken.

Up to 500 measurement points around the cross-section are recorded simultaneously in a coordinate system displaying the actual cross-sectional form. This forms the basis for fine adjustments of the intended finished dimension tolerances, if necessary. Fluctuations in cross-section, temperature or steel grade of the ingoing material are automatically compensated.

MEERgauge allows fully automatic hydraulic adjustment under load of the three-roll PSM® (Precision Sizing Mill), independently of the operating personnel.

MEERgauge was completely installed and integrated into the existing plant control system in just one week.
