ThyssenKrupp VDM Orders Complete Grinding Line from SMS Meer

ThyssenKrupp VDM in Altena, Germany, is working to strengthen its position on the market and has therefore ordered an RSM 60 regulating-wheel grinder with complete finishing line from SMS Meer.

From May 2013, ThyssenKrupp VDM will be able to produce up to 13 m long round bars of the highest quality in Altena. The products are used in the aircraft, aerospace and automotive industries and in the field of oil exploration.

The regulating-wheel grinder from SMS Meer pregrinds or finish-grinds round bars of steel and NF metals in a single pass. The RSM 60 is of very torsionally rigid design, permits high cutting rates and has a high diameter tolerance. It easily grinds high-strength bars and bars made of materials which are difficult to machine.

The large working range of 6 to 125 mm diameter and bar lengths up to 13 m makes the material feeding a particular challenge: Bundles of up to 100 bars have to be reliably separated and loaded into the machine, otherwise machine standstills are the consequence. SMS Meer solves the problem with a special step separation system.

In the future, ThyssenKrupp VDM will monitor the sophisticated processes on the new machine with a high degree of automation: Machine control, process monitoring and diameter control as well as the interface to the PDA system all form part of the order.

The supply is completed by systems for emulsion treatment and air exhausting. SMS Meer is also to perform the whole machine erection.

The new grinding line is scheduled to go into operation in May 2013.

SMS Meer offers high-performance machines and plants for steel production, tubes, long products, forging, NF metals and heat treatment. Approximately 3,000 employees realize an order intake of about €1.3 billion.

The activities of the Inoxum Group, part of ThyssenKrupp AG, are divided into two segments: the Stainless Steel segment stands for the worldwide production, processing and distribution of stainless steel flat products. The High Performance Alloys segment brings together the production and distribution of high-performance materials such as nickel alloys, titanium and zirconium. ThyssenKrupp VDM based in Werdohl, Germany, is responsible for this segment. The Inoxum Group includes companies with plants in Germany, Italy, Mexico, China and the USA employing roughly 11,500 people. On 31 January 2012, ThyssenKrupp AG announced the combination of Inoxum and Outokumpu, a global stainless steel corporation with headquarters in Finland. The combination is subject to regulatory approval. The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.
