ThyssenKrupp VDM Further Develops Alloy 31 Material
07/28/2011 - ThyssenKrupp VDM has further developed its tried-and-tested material Alloy 31 and claim to have improved upon its properties. The new Nicrofer 3426 hMo occupies a position between high-alloy nickel materials and stainless steels and is a superaustenitic.
The research laboratories of ThyssenKrupp VDM have further developed the tried-and-tested material Alloy 31 and claim to have improved upon its properties. The new Nicrofer 3426 hMo occupies a position between high-alloy nickel materials and stainless steels and is a superaustenitic, containing additional high alloying elements chromium and molybdenum for improved corrosion resistance.
ThyssenKrupp VDM researchers utilized computer simulation programs to optimize the composition of the entire alloy system. Initial commercial heats have been produced, confirming the market-readiness of the new high-performance material.
The new alloy not only offers exceptional corrosion resistance but also outstanding processing capabilities and properties, the company claims. It has high chromium content of 26 to 28%. The material also has a stable austenitic microstructure and the alloying elements nickel and nitrogen make processing easier as a result of low solution annealing temperatures. In addition, a low carbon content improves resistance to intergranular corrosion, in which elements are removed from the metal matrix adjacent to grain boundaries.
Nicrofer 3426 hMo is an important component of equipment for the chemical process industry, and in particular for the production and processing of sulfuric and phosphoric acid.
ThyssenKrupp VDM (Werdohl) manufactures high-performance materials, including nickel alloys, special stainless steels and zirconium and titanium mill products. The company has been supplying sheet, plate, rods, ingots, strip and wire for more than 80 years. Its main customers are in the engineering, energy production, oil and gas, electrical, electronics, automotive and aerospace sectors. ThyssenKrupp VDM has German production sites in Werdohl, Altena, Unna, Siegen and Essen as well as two plants in the U.S.
