ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe Creates Unique Service Center in Krefeld
11/06/2013 - ThyssenKrupp Stahl-Service-Center has entered into a partnership to develop new market segments in the sheet sector.
ThyssenKrupp Stahlkontor, a Düsseldorf-based steel distributor and processor, has relocated one of its operations to the company's state-of-the-art site in Krefeld. And it has brought with it a new cut-to-length line. Together the two ThyssenKrupp companies offer a unique portfolio with a wide range of processing options for flat carbon steel — above all from ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe.
Demand for advanced high-strength steels produced by ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe is on the rise. But sophisticated high-tech equipment is needed to process these materials. By working together with sister companies ThyssenKrupp Stahl-Service-Center and ThyssenKrupp Stahlkontor, the Duisburg-based steel producer and its partners have created an optimum process chain — from production to custom processing to just-in-time delivery.
Strong demand for advanced high-strength steels
At its Krefeld location ThyssenKrupp Stahl-Service-Center offers state-of-the-art facilities for processing a wide variety of steel grades, including high-strength steels in outer panel quality for the auto industry. The product range includes slit strip in thicknesses of 0.3 mm to 16.0 mm and widths of 7 mm to 1,812 mm as well as sheet and blanks in thicknesses of 0.4 mm to 3.5 mm. Now the international steel service center organization is expanding its hot-rolled coil portfolio and entering into a partnership with sister company ThyssenKrupp Stahlkontor. Optimum water, rail and road links were key factors in ThyssenKrupp Stahlkontor's decision to relocate to Krefeld and invest in a new FIMI cut-to-length line.
New cut-to-length line expands product range
Commissioned this autumn, the cut-to-length line is designed to handle coils with maximum diameters of 2,300 mm and weights up to 36 t. The new machine is an impressive addition to the processing capabilities at the Krefeld location: It can process coils into sheet and blanks up to 16 mm thick and 12,000 mm long. As well as being flexible, the line operates at high speed working to very tight length tolerances. It cuts sheets between 500 and 1,000 mm long to a length tolerance of -0/+0.4 mm, while the line speed for material 3 mm to 16 mm thick is between 0 mm and 50 mpm.
Thanks to the synergies from the cooperation between ThyssenKrupp Stahl-Service-Center and ThyssenKrupp Stahlkontor, a sizeable volume of high-strength hot-rolled coil can now be processed in Krefeld in addition to the existing product lines. And the excellent infrastructure at the Lower Rhine location means the material can be delivered just-in-time by road, rail or ship anywhere in Europe.
ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe is focused on the attractive market for premium flat carbon steel, where it is one of the world’s technological leaders. It employs around 27,800 people and in fiscal year 2011/2012 generated sales of just under €11 billion. Its capabilities range from intelligent material solutions and product-specific processing to comprehensive service. Steel Europe serves a broad spectrum of steel-using industries, including the automotive, shipbuilding, engineering, construction, packaging and appliance sectors.
