ThyssenKrupp Nirosta Receives Contract for New Airport in Qatar

ThyssenKrupp Nirosta has received a contract to supply 100 tonnes of stainless steel for a new international airport being built by the Emirate of Qatar on a 22-km2 site in the capital Doha. It will be used for the facade of the new passenger terminal, which will be mainly glass interspersed with stainless steel.

Produced at the company’s Krefeld and Dillenburg plants, the Nirosta 4404 stainless steel will be supplied in a thickness of 2 mm with the “linen” and new “microlinen” finishes.

The airport in Qatar is the main hub for Qatar Airways, one of the fastest-growing international airlines. The New Doha International Airport will be one of the first in the world designed to handle modern super-jumbo aircraft like the Airbus A380, for which an extra-long 4850-meter runway is planned.

The Emirate of Qatar is investing around US$14 billion in the new airport, which is scheduled to open in mid 2011.

Following the recently opened Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the world’s tallest building, Doha airport is another showcase project for ThyssenKrupp Nirosta in the Middle East.

“Our material copes particularly well with the climate conditions in this region,” said Gert Weiß, Head of Product Service at ThyssenKrupp Nirosta.
