ThyssenKrupp Files Air Permits in Two States

March 16, 2007 — ThyssenKrupp Steel and Stainless USA, LLC has filed permit applications in both Alabama and Louisiana for its planned $2.9-billion facility.

ThyssenKrupp’s new $2.9 billion facility will manufacture and process carbon steel and stainless steel for manufacturers throughout North America.

The new plant complex is considered to be one of the largest private industrial development projects in the United States over the next decade.

Expected to begin operations in 2010, the plant will employ 2,700 people when it becomes fully operational.

It will serve industries including automotive, packaging, construction, electrical and utility, in addition to serving manufacturers of appliances, precision machinery and engineered products.

The filings were submitted to each state’s respective environmental agency—the Alabama Department of Environmental Management and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality. These permits are required under the Clean Air Act to provide an analysis of emission sources prior to construction.

“We are pleased to submit air permit applications to both the Alabama and Louisiana Environmental Departments, said Robert P. Soulliere, President and CEO of ThyssenKrupp Steel and Stainless USA, LLC. “These filings represent another important milestone as we continue our site selection process.”

The applications filed in each state detail such information as a description of the construction process; emissions calculations and air dispersion modeling assessments; best achievable control technologies employed during construction to ensure limited emissions; and computer modeling demonstrating that the facility, once operational, will meet or exceed the National Ambient Air Quality Standards and applicable state air guidelines.

“We are confident that our filings demonstrate ThyssenKrupp’s environmental know-how and our focus on the development of processes that are environmentally friendly and conserve resources,” noted Soulliere. “We are committed to incorporating state-of-the-art technology to limit any air emissions.”

Over the past several months, ThyssenKrupp has been conducting extensive due diligence to construct and operate its $2.9-billion steelmaking and processing complex, which is said to be one of the largest private industrial development projects in the U.S. over the next decade. The company has not yet made a decision about the final site, but expects to complete the site selection process as expeditiously as possible.

“We look forward to continue working with officials in both Alabama and Louisiana as we move forward with the site selection process,” Soulliere concluded.

In the coming weeks, the company says it will file additional permits in both states, including a Section 404/10 application with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers related to the Clean Water Act (33 U.S.C. 1344) and the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899 (U.S.C. 403).
